NFI (Non Food Items) DISTRIBUTION
IN EARTHQUAKE AFFECTED AREAS

BEST NFI Mobile Teams distributed NFIs (Blankets, Plastic Sheets etc.) to the camp population in Mansehra District:
  1. During the reporting period, UNHCR received an offer from World Vision International to provide over 5,600 heaters for family tents, of which 2,250 were allocated to Mansehra Hub areas and 3,460 to Batagram. The heaters have a protective barrier around the flame and UNHCR has obtained approval from the Army for the heaters and kerosene to be distributed to camps in Siran Valley and
Abbotabad. About 900 World Vision heaters were distributed to individual family tents in 8 camps in Siran Valley and some 1,300 heaters to families in Abbotabad. (MSF had already distributed 8,184 heaters in the Mansehra and Balakot areas in previous reporting periods.)

  2. Fire safety awareness leaflets were distributed to every family receiving a heater and training programmes are being carried out in all the camps by BEST and THW.

  3. Community fire fighters have been identified and trained in each camp and fire-fighting kits comprising a fire extinguisher, bucket and large fire beater have been provided for every 50 tents.

  4. Initial kerosene distribution (5 litres per family) is now completed in Siran Valley and will be replenished every 6th day by BEST. In Abbotabad, initial allocation of 5 litres of kerosene per heater has been distributed to over half the families by BEST, with the remaining to be completed alongside training of local fire-fighting squads and delivery of fire safety awareness programme, by 20 January. BEST and UNHCR will continue to provide kerosene to families until the end of March.
